Morrison began studying Japanese in high school while at the Indiana Academy for the Sciences, Mathematics and Humanities in Muncie.
She continued her studies at I.U., graduating with a double major in East Asian languages and literature, and gender studies. After graduation, she spent three years in Japan working as an assistant language teacher and as a coordinator for international relations in the JET Programme.
After returning to the U.S., she enrolled at American University in Washington, D.C., in the School of International Service doing comparative and regional studies, East Asian, with a related field of security studies.
American University offers a dual master's degree in this field - one from AU and one from a university in Japan. Morrison was accepted as a student by Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan, and was recommended by them to the Japanese government to receive the Monbukagakusho Scholarship.[[In-content Ad]]This scholarship includes free tuition and books at the university, round-trip airfare and a monthly stipend for a period of 18 to 24 months. While there, she will earn a master's degree in global governance and conduct individual research on Japanese nationalism.
