This is the second letter of my series of letters dealing with the subject of fascism and communism in the 20th century. The first letter of my series, which was printed on Jan. 2 and Jan. 10, dealt with the democidal death toll (intentional mass killing of citizens and foreigners by governments) inflicted by various fascist, communist and other regimes. This letter will focus on fascism the ideology of such past fascist and semi-fascist regimes, such as Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Imperial Japan, Francoist Spain, Peronist Argentina and Vichy France. It is also the ideology behind the pro-Nazi advertisement and letter to the editor that appeared in the Nov. 11 and Nov. 22 editions of the Times-Union.
I will have to divide this letter into two parts. This part will list 15 out of 43 sources of information that readers of the Times-Union can use if they want to research this subject for themselves. The second part, which will follow at a later date, will deal with the basic elements of fascism.
Most of the following books listed below are available at the Warsaw Community Public Library.
1. Concepts in Social Thought: Fascism (1997).
2. Propaganda: The Art of Persuasion: World War I; An Allied and Axis Visual Record, 1933-45 (1976).
3. Today's ISM'S: Communism, Fascism, Capitalism, Socialism, Ninth Edition (1985).
4. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany (1960).
5. The German Dictatorship: The Origins, Structure and Effects of National Socialism (1970).
6. The Third Reich: A New History (2000).
7. Mussolini's Italy: Twenty Years of the Fascist Era (1973).
8. European Nations: Italy: A Reference Guide from the Renaissance to the Present (2004).
9. Japan's War: The Great Pacific Conflict 1853-1952 (1986).
10. Japan: A Country Study (1982).
11. The Franco Regime: 1936-75 (2000).
