Moral Decline

Events in society (and recent letters to the editor) have compelled me to reflect on how our values have changed through the years. I believe that our morals are in a chronic state of decay; crumbling further into destruction because of all the negative influences we are subjected to each day.

Two recent letters to the editor (both dated Nov. 2, 2007) have me questioning where our common sense has gone. The grandmother with a sick grandchild on her hands; trying to provide him medical treatment while breaking traffic laws.

She realizes she broke the law, give her the ticket; but don't bring her down to a substandard level, that of a criminal, because it's not necessary. She was only trying to take care of his basic needs. Had she not, then what? My guess is she would have been falsely accused of child neglect. Our police force is to serve and protect. Protect what? Ignoring the medical treatment of a sick child is protecting him? It seems to me that antagonizing this "granny" was the main goal rather than the best interest of a child in need.

What about those who have no conscious stealing from the innocence of little kids? What kind of value system was implemented here and where did it come from, under a rock? This is a prime example of moral decline.

If he is taught today that stealing is acceptable, as a society, we are only doing him a disservice because a future of incarceration is what will be around the corner if he is not taught now what is right and wrong.

Those involved in wrong-doing should be reprimanded immediately and some form of restitution should be implemented; even those of a higher standing. Those who were perpetrated against should also receive an apology.

This will be a reminder that this is unacceptable behavior. The father was only acting on instinct, standing up for his beliefs, not allowing a bully to pray on the innocence of a child.

Daily, families are crumbling before our eyes. There are situations where children are allowed to be free and in charge of their own self; controlling their own destiny. Rules and consequences are not part of the equation because there is no accountability or respect in existence. By all appearances, the motions are complete to satisfy those looking inward. The mentality is that this is an ideal environment. The average person will be able to forecast this is an illusion for success.

Warsaw is not immune from those who go against the norm; showing no remorse for their actions. If we don't open our eyes to the daily injustice, we will continue to exchange tranquility for chaos and our morals will fade to toxic levels.
