Celebrating senior day in the Tiger Den, Warsaw (18-4) finished the regular season with a 50-45 victory over Carroll (13-8), but more importantly, the Tigers welcomed back Mr. Basketball candidate Nic Moore.[[In-content Ad]]After suffering a second-degree MCL sprain Feb. 15 against South Bend Clay, Moore was absent in losses to Class 2A No. 5 Fort Wayne Bishop Luers and Marion, but donned a knee brace to be a part of Saturday's senior celebration.
"He decided that he had had enough," Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said about Moore. "I wasn't sure how much he'd want to play in the first half. It was great to see him out there."
After playing in the first half, scoring seven points and dishing out three assists, Moore called it an afternoon at halftime, coming out for third quarter with a large ice bag taped to his knee.
Without Moore, Warsaw still kept the Chargers at bay, as junior Jordyn Coon and sophomore Jared Bloom each netted 10 points and senior Jalen Roscoe put up eight points and six rebounds.
"I think we can gain some confidence from this game," Ogle said. "It was nice to see Nic out there for the first half. We also got another tough break when (junior) Jay Holladay sprained his ankle (Friday) in practice, so he was unavailable today. I thought Jared Bloom did a nice job, and Jalen Roscoe had some nice plays."
In honor of the team's seniors, Ogle went with a starting lineup of Moore, along with regular reserves Joey Sparkman, Brock Davis, Christopher O'Hara and Travis Thomas, but the five got the team off to a 7-0 start.
"I was proud of the way our seniors came in and started the game," Ogle said.
The slow start to the half would be duplicated by the Chargers after the halftime break, as they were outscored 9-2 to open the third quarter.
"You're playing catch-up right away in the first two minutes of each quarter," Carroll coach Marty Beasley said. "It's hard to win games that way. If you can start and finish each quarter, you're going to win games."
Carroll led the game just once, at 19-18 early in the second quarter, but things did get hairy for the Tigers in the fourth.
Opening the quarter with a 40-29 lead, the Tigers witnessed Carroll tie the game at 45-45 following a three-pointer by senior Erik Ward with 1:28 to play.
Having just blown a 10-point lead with three minutes to play in a 60-59 overtime loss at Marion Wednesday, the Tigers didn't let that happen again, going 5 of 8 from the free-throw line down the stretch.
"We ended the game stronger," Ogle said. "Hopefully, this will help our confidence and team pysche a little bit. We're going to need to play well Tuesday night, that's for sure."
The Tigers open Class 4A Sectional 4 action at Elkhart's North Side Gym Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Concord, a squad it defeated 57-55 in overtime on Jan. 21 in Warsaw.
"I wish we could have played (Friday), so we could have had practice today, but that wasn't the case," Ogle said about preparing for the Concord Minutemen, whose coach Steve Austin was in attendance for Saturday's game.
Because of Thursday night's snowfall, Carroll couldn't make it to Warsaw for the regularly scheduled game Friday. With the delay, Warsaw's six seniors had to wait 18 more hours before playing their final game in the Tiger Den.
"I'm real appreciative of our seniors - all six of them," Ogle said. "They've had a tremendous impact on our program."
