Moore, Tigers Put Hurtin' On Raiders

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Because Warsaw Community High School Athletic Trainer Corey Branam worked his magic, senior Nic Moore was able to work his.

Despite suffering an ankle injury in practice Wednesday, and missing Thursday's practice because of it, the 5-foot-9 Moore scored 24 points and dished out six assists Friday as the Class 4A No. 6 Tigers beat Northridge 56-28 in Northern Lakes Conference boys basketball action.[[In-content Ad]]"I thought he looked good," Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said of Moore, who finished the game 9 of 13 from the field overall, 5 of 6 from three-point range, and 1 of 2 at the free throw line. "I thought Nic played pretty well."

In leading the Tigers to the 28-point win, Moore became just the third player in Warsaw boys basketball history to score 1,600 career points.

The Ilinois State-bound Moore now has 1,612 points and trails only Kevin Ault (2,028) and Jeff Grose (1,749).

"We're trying to search for more offensive balance," said Ogle, whose team improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the NLC. "We can't depend on Nic to carry too much of the offensive burden."

Jordyn Coon scored nine points for Warsaw, while Jalen Roscoe added six points and Lucas Grose and Jared Bloom chipped in with four points each.

Rhett Kesler scored three points, while Jay Holladay, Travis Thomas and Clay Anderson chipped in with two points each.

"I thought tonight we took a step forward offensively," said Ogle. "This was one of the few times we had more assists than turnovers. That's a positive for us."

The Tigers turned the ball over nine times, while dishing out 11 assists.

The Raiders, who fell to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play, dished out just six assists and committed 12 turnovers.

Warsaw turned those 12 turnovers into 23 points.

The Tigers led 12-8 after one quarter of play, 30-15 at halftime and 41-24 at the end of the third quarter.

Warsaw finished the game 20 of 31 (65 percent) from the field overall, 6 of 8 from three-point range, and 10 of 15 at the charity stripe.

"It was noticeable tonight that we had some guys confident in their shot," said Ogle. "There were a number of guys ready to score. This was a good game for our confidence."

The Tigers have won 14 consecutive NLC games and 14 consecutive contests in the Tiger Den.

"In this series, the visiting team has won the last five games," said Ogle. "We kind of wanted to stop that streak. In the eight games I had coached against Northridge, the visiting team had won seven times. We play well at home, and I thought we played well tonight."

Over the course of Moore's career at Warsaw, the Tigers own a home record of 31-4.

Malcom Thurmond led Northridge with 11 points, while Gavin Blyly scored six points and Sam Ahonen and Jordan Carithers chipped in with three points each.

The Raiders finished the game 10 of 25 (40 percent) from the field overall, 5 of 14 from three-point range, and 3 of 5 at the charity stripe.

The Tigers are in action again tonight when they host the Fort Wayne Northrop Bruins, who also boast and 8-1 record and a Division I player in Purdue commit Bryson Scott.

"Northrop has one loss, and they didn't play (Friday night)," said Ogle. "We look forward to the Bruins coming in here. They're a very athletic team, and any time you put two high Division I players on the court it's fun to watch."
