Moore, who supplanted the elder Grose's total of 1,749 points when he scored a bucket 49 seconds into the first quarter, tossed in a team-high 23 points and upped his career total to 1,771.[[In-content Ad]]Moore, who was 7 of 9 from the field overall, 2 of 4 from three-point range and 7 of 7 at the charity stripe, trails only 1996 Mr. Basketball Kevin Ault, who scored 2,028 points in a Warsaw uniform.
"I thought Nic Moore was very patient tonight," said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team improved to 14-1 on the season. "I like how he played tonight."
Junior Lucas Grose was also 7 of 9 from the field en route to scoring 17 points for the Tigers, who hadn't played Culver Academy since the championship game of the sectional in 1997.
Grose pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Moore dished out a game-high five assists.
"The combination of Nic Moore and Lucas Grose was very good tonight," said Ogle, whose team also got seven points from junior Jordyn Coon. "I thought we did a better job feeding Lucas Grose and getting him some more opportunities."
As impressive as Moore and Grose were, back-to-back three-pointers by senior Joey Sparkman and junior Rhett Kesler broke a 41-all tie and gave the Tigers a six-point lead late in the third quarter.
"The back-to-back three-pointers were big," said Ogle. "Joey Sparkman and Rhett Kesler hitting those shots, that was good stuff."
A trey by Coon gave Warsaw a 52-45 lead with 7:16 remaining in the game, but the Eagles, who were playing without 7-foot-1 New Mexico recruit Chier Ajour because of a knee injury, refused to go away.
Senior Juwan Brescacin made good on a pair of free throws to cut Warsaw's advantage to three, 56-53, with 1:09 to play.
Culver Academy missed two three-point attempts in the final 40 seconds, and Coon put the game away with two free throws with three seconds remaining.
With the loss, the Eagles fell to 8-5 on the season.
"There was a couple times in the game our poise and perseverance showed," said Ogle. "We got down a couple times, but kept our poise and fought back. Our guys don't get rattled when the other team gets a lead."
The game featured seven ties and six lead changes.
Warsaw trailed 18-13 after the first quarter of play but led 35-30 at halftime and 49-45 heading into the fourth.
The Eagles' last lead was a 41-39 advantage in the third quarter.
Culver Academy finished the game 18 of 39 (46 percent) from the field overall, 4 of 12 from three-point range, and 13 of 16 at the free throw line.
The Tigers, who a night earlier improved to 5-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference with a 44-32 win over NorthWood, were 18 of 30 (60 percent) overall, 6 of 11 from the arc, and 16 of 21 at the charity stripe.
Junior Jermaine Myers led the Eagles with a game-high 24 points, while Brescacin chipped in with 21 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Warsaw is in action again Friday when it hosts NLC foe Elkhart Memorial.
