Monroe School Reunion a Great Success

PIERCETON – The Monroe School Reunion was June 5 at the Pierceton Elementary School.

This was the first reunion ever held.

Monroe Consolidated School, Monroe Township, Kosciusko County, started holding classes in the second semester of 1917 and the last attending class was June 26, 1969.

There were 148 people in attendance.

Jeanette Homan Mast was chairperson of the committee who planned the event.

Members of the planning committee were Elaine Carlin Brown, Barbara Plew Faris and Terri Evans Collier.

Those helping on the day of the reunion were Linden Boggs, Stan Brown, Keith Carlin, Don Ellison, Gene Messmore, Marie Messmore Trump, Steve Aker, Judy Lee Krieder and Dan Ransbottom.

Barbara Carlin, Kelly Ellison and Lew Collier assisted.

Katie Brown designed the post cards.

The festivities were started by Stan Brown ringing the bell believed to be from the Monroe School.

Terri Collier, as emcee, welcomed everyone and instructed everyone to check for a sticker under their placemats, which meant that person won one of the sack lunches that served as decorations on the tables.

Also on the tables was a brief history of Monroe School.

Josephine Likens, at 102 years young, was recognized as the oldest alumni of Monroe School, having attended in the early 1920s.

Also attending from the 1920s were Lillian Cress McConnell, Emogene Hossler Leasure and Maxine Fawley Cole.
Mrs. Likens, and son Steven Likens, traveled the farthest, from California.

Steve Likens entertained the group by playing the piano and singing a couple of songs.

The Sheperd family was recognized as having the most siblings who attended Monroe in attendance.

Joan Hostetler, a professional archivist, presented a short slide show of pictures relating to Monroe Township.

James Busz said he had the flag pole from the school.

Dennis Andrews explained the history of a quilt made by the girls of Monroe and instructed by principal and teacher John Andrews.

A painting of Monroe School, pained by Marilyn Tennant Shaffer, was on display.

There was discussion that the Ben England family owns the cement name plate that bears the name Monroe Township Consolidates School.
