He was born June 21, 1943, in Blue River, Ky., to Harry and Pollie Hale Prater. On June 21, 1975, in Elkhart, he married Ethel Lou Blair, who survives. They were married 34 years.
He was a resident of Kosciusko County for the past 38 years. On March 8, 1975, he began working at DePuy, Warsaw, as the number one polisher until his retirement in July 2009. He was an avid hunter, hunting rabbits and deer. He loved hunting with his DePuy buddies, especially when he would go "boom boom" and say, "Well boys, get your tags out, you're done." He was a blessed husband, a wonderful father and the most blessed wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather.
He will be lovingly remembered by a son, Richard Lee (and spouse Kathy) Westerman Jr., Sidney; a daughter, Linda Sue (and spouse Rudy) Sanchez, Arlington Heights, Ill.; five grandchildren: Sally Jane Swihart, Warsaw; Michael Lee Swihart, Arlington Heights; Sarah Lou Swihart, Washington State; Kimberly Sue Craft, Sidney; and Alissha Kay Westerman, Sidney; five great-grandchildren; Kylee, Jenna, Shelby, Emily, Jordan Monroe "Little Moe"; two brothers, A.C. (and spouse Jo Ann) Prater, Rochester, and Orville (and spouse Audrey) Prater, Wendover, Ky.; and a sister, Ellie (and spouse Lawrence) Manns, Warsaw. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Rawlins.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, with Pastors Frank Whitaker and Terry Bradford officiating. Burial will be in Sycamore Cemetery, Mentone.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
