Two people were killed and four others were injured in a two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon south of Warsaw.
Olvin Canales, 19, of Kuder Lane, Warsaw, and Frank Pineda, 17, of Boys City Drive, Winona Lake, were pronounced dead at the scene of the 2:26 p.m. accident at the intersection of County Farm Road and CR 300S.
Both Canales, who was driving the car, and Pineda, who was a front-seat passenger, were ejected from the vehicle and suffered internal injuries. Neither was wearing a seat belt, police said. Two back-seat passengers were trapped in the car until emergency personnel extricated them.
Kendra Locke, 14, of St. Marys Drive, Warsaw, suffered head injuries, and Nichole Caudill, 14, of South Magee Road, Warsaw, suffered multiple fractures. Both were airlifted from the scene to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where Locke was listed in critical condition and Caudill in serious condition this morning. Officials said it wasn't clear whether Locke was wearing a seat belt, but they know Caudill was restrained in her seat.
According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department press release and accident report, Canales was eastbound on CR 300S when he reportedly disregarded the stop sign at County Farm Road and was struck by a large sport utility vehicle driven by Monroe Howard, 46, of South County Farm Road, Warsaw.
Howard complained of back pain and was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital and released. A passenger in his vehicle, Sharon Howard, 48, of South County Farm Road, suffered multiple injuries and was treated at KCH before being transferred to Parkview, where she was listed in fair condition this morning.
A resident who lives near the intersection told police he was standing outside and heard Canales' car approaching at what he believed to be a high rate of speed, saw the car enter the intersection without stopping for the stop sign and then witnessed the impact.
After impact, both vehicles left the roadway at the east corner of the intersection, where it is believed Howard's vehicle rolled over before coming to rest on the hood of Canales' car.
The KCSD was assisted at the scene by personnel from Warsaw fire and police departments, Winona Lake Police Department and Multi-Township Emergency Medical Service.
The accident remains under investigation. [[In-content Ad]]
