Erwin "Pete" Mitchell is seeking re-election to the Whitko School Board Corp.'s board of trustees.

Mitchell's first term began in 2002. He represents the town of Larwill and Richland Township in Whitley County, and the town of Sidney and Jackson Township in Kosciusko County.

Voters will elect two Whitko School Board representatives in the May 2 primary election. Mitchell is running for the District 2 seat.

E. Marie Trump, whose District 1 seat also is open, has indicated she will not seek re-election.

A long-time resident of Richland Township, Mitchell worked for the school district as director of maintenance. He retired in 2001 with 24 years of service.

Mitchell said he is seeking re-election to the school board's District 2 position to assist in making the local schools the best in Indiana.

He wants to see the completion of renovations at Whitko High School. He recognizes this upgrade will improve future academic changes and meet local high school needs for many years to come.

"I enjoy working with the other school board members and administration," Mitchell said. "I am retired and have the time to devote to the school corporation. I think I can contribute to making our schools a safer place for children to learn. Schools are going through some hard times financially and I feel my experience can be of help. Good things are ahead for the Whitko Community School Corp. and I would like to be a part of it.

"Our test scores and graduation rates need to be improved. We must make sure our students are ready for college by continually monitoring our science, English and math scores. Our students deserve the best we can give them."

Mitchell's years with Whitko began in 1977 when he was director of maintenance and transportation. In 1984 these departments were split. Mitchell was named head of the maintenance department. Prior to working at Whitko, Mitchell worked at Holmes Lumber Co. in Columbia City for 20 years.

Since his election to the Whitko School Board in 2002, Mitchell has served as vice president of the board and currently serves as secretary of the Whitko Board of Finance.

Mitchell served for two years on the Whitley County Council on Aging's board of directors. He served on the maintenance committee and volunteers regularly at the Senior Citizens Center in Whitley County.

A 46-year Richland Township resident, Mitchell attended Larwill School until 1952 and graduated from Bippus High School in Huntington County in 1955.

He attended Manchester College and Olivet College.

Mitchell is married to Clara. The couple have one daughter, Mrs. Tom (Pam) Kessie, and two grandsons. His daughter, son-in-law and grandsons are Whitko High School graduates. [[In-content Ad]]
