DUNLAP - Two weeks after helping the Wawasee girls swim team win its first Northern Lakes Conference title in 18 years, Wawasee junior Breanna Robinson and freshman Paige Miller were at it again Saturday afternoon.
Competing at Concord High School, where the team won the NLC Championships on Jan. 18, the Wawasee Lady Warriors won the title with 410 points, while Northridge was second with 370 and Concord was third with 313.
The championship is Wawasee's first since it won three-straight between 1997 and 1999.
"There's always bumps in the road, but at the end of the day, the kids stepped up and did an amazing job," the sectional's coach of the year Julie Robinson said of the Lady Warriors. "There were just some amazing swims today. It's just great to see the girls accomplish their goal."
The most amazing swims were accomplished by Julie's daughter Breanna and Miller.
Miller started Wawasee's run of state qualifiers by winning the 200 IM in 2:06.36, setting a new pool and meet record, with that meet record breaking Wawasee graduate Cathy Lundlin's 1994 time of 2:07.31.
Miller went on to hold off Northridge freshman Katie Hughes in the 500 free, winning in 5:00.24, although Hughes' 5:01.33 was below the state-cut time.
"I just can't stand being that close and losing," Miller said. "It's just the competitiveness in me, to just go faster and give it that much more to win.
"I know she likes to build during races, so I knew in the last 100 (yards) I had to step it up or she'd beat me," she added about her second first-place finish.
The victory in the 500 free makes Miller 10-0 in the event this year, and her only second-place finish in any event was a second on Dec. 10 at Concord, when Ashley Schrock nipped her in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.63 to her 2:10.81.
Miller did get back at Shrock, defeating her at the NLC meet, then at the sectional.
Outside of the 500 free, Miller's 9-1 season record spans over the 200 IM (2-1), 200 free (6-0) and 100 back (1-0), and can only be surpassed by Robinson.
Going a perfect 20-0 on the year, Robinson's been diverse, winning in the 200 IM (1-0), 100 free (2-0), 100 fly (8-0), 200 free (3-0) and 100 back (6-0)over the course of the year.
Coming into the season, Robinson had already won the 200 free and 100 free sectional titles twice, but wanted to branch out.
"I told my mom before I even came into high school that I wasn't going to be like everybody else," she said. "I didn't want to do the same two events all four years. This year, I wanted to mix it up and show colleges what I can do."
Along with winning sectionals in the two events, Robinson has also finished third at state in the 100 free twice, as well as second in the 200 free as a freshman, then third last year.
Despite that success, she's moving on to other events, but still moving on to state.
In the 100 fly, she finished first in 54.60, then won the 100 back in 54.65, breaking the pool and meet record time of 56.17, set by her older sister Brittany in 2012.
"I'm very excited, especially after those two 54s today," Breanna said. "I am very excited for next weekend."
And how excited is she about erasing some of the sister's records?
"I won't be making that phone call," she said about conversing with Brittany, who's currently a sophomore on the University of Louisville swim team.
Breanna and Miller teamed up with junior Kendra Miller and sophomore Kayla Hershberger to break another Brittany Robinson record, as the foursome improved to 10-0 on the season by winning the 400 free relay in 3:34.15, which broke the meet and pool record set in 2012 by Wawasee's Sarah Rozow, Sarah Steele, Brittany Robinson and a young Breanna Robinson.
Wawasee's 200 free relay of Kendra Miller, Paige Miller, Robinson and sophomore Mikala Mawhorter didn't set any records, but it will be competing at the state meet, winning the sectional in 1:38.23.
The state finals begin with Friday's prelims at IUPUI, with the top 16 qualifiers moving on to Saturday's finals.
In all, Wawasee will be represented in six events at the state finals, but because the 500 free, 200 free relay, 100 back and 400 free relay are four of the final five events, some moves will undoubtedly be made to keep Miller and Robinson fresh for their individual events.
"We're definitely going to have to look at the 200 free (relay), because it's right before the 100 back," Robinson said. "We might have to do a little switching."
At the state meet, Breanna Robinson has a lot of experience, but Julie Robinson feels just as comfortable with Miller.
"Paige has been a club swimmer for a long time and she's a racer" the Wawasee coach said. "When she and Bre get behind the blocks, you know their nerves are settled and they're going to get the job done."
And based on their practice routine, the sectional wasn't where the two were supposed to peak.
"Paige and Breanna did not taper for this meet, because they're tapering for state," Julie Robinson said. "So, they just need to take (Sunday) to loosen and stretch up and get ready for Friday."
