The two-pump station at 4th and East streets will replace an older sewage collection system that council members agreed is falling apart and in immediate need of replacement. With a 400-gallons-per-minute capacity, twice that of the existing station, the town hopes it will serve current customers as well as more than 200 acres of newly annexed land to the northeast – along with prospective industrial tenants.
The cost for the new station was originally estimated at around $200,000. Council President Doug Ruch credited the diligent work of Randy Veach, head of the water department, with keeping costs down.
Costs include $21,200 for electrical systems, $17,421 for the two pumps, $15,300 for plumbing, and $13,600 for installation of a wet well. Other costs include $5,000 for electric generator hookup and $5,000 for site plans, required for Indiana Department of Environmental Management approval.
Other purchases the council approved Monday include $9,034 for two self-contained breathing apparatuses for the fire department, with two older but still working apparatuses to be moved from the station to the water and sewer department; and $5,906 for a heater and air conditioner for the fire house.
The council also heard from Town Marshal Rich Miotto that grants he secured last year saved the town $6,980. He said his department recently learned they will receive a matching grant from Kosciusko County Emergency Management for narrow-band radios for the two squad cars, meaning a cost of $1,453 for the town, which was previously approved.[[In-content Ad]]
