Carol Laureys, representing Crafstation Inc., presented plans for a business that would be a combination gas station and fast-food restaurant. The proposed site is currently occupied by the Diamond Auto Sales lot.[[In-content Ad]]Although there have been rumors about certain national food chains becoming part of the business, according to Laureys nothing specific is in place at this time. No national gasoline brand is signed on to the venture yet, either, although the company has partnered with Citgo in the past.
Laureys did say that at least 15 jobs would be brought to the community, and maybe more depending on what fast-food company comes on board.
Laureys' purpose in attending the meeting was to present plans and ask the council for a letter of recommendation. While she said that she knows there are obvious changes that will have to be made to the initial building and site plans, the council's approval would help the project along when going before the county plan commission. The council agreed to draft a letter of recommendation for the proposed business.
The ongoing problem with the property at 310 E. Williams St. was yet again brought before the council by concerned neighbors. Numerous requests have been made to have a building inspector look at the property, but neighbors say nothing has happened. An inspector with offices in the county, Hal Hansboro, has not responded to repeated calls.
In order to get the county to move on the matter, an official inspector's report is needed. It was decided to get another inspector's input if calls remain unanswered.
Town Marshall Rich Miotto presented the council with several items of police business. The department wants to purchase an in-car video unit that can interface with the onboard computer system. The price for two units is $9,806, but Miotto mentioned that a grant for $4,200 has been awarded to the department. Another $700 would be needed to play the shortfall.
The council accepted the grant award, and Miotto stated that he was looking into a separate funding source to cover the $700 shortfall.
The state of Indiana has increased the number of in-service training hours for police from 16 to 24. According to Miotto, the South Bend Regional Police Academy offers various courses that would enable local officers to meet this requirement, without too much schedule conflict. Cost is $500 for the year for the entire department. The council approved this request.
Miotto also requested that the council approve his attending a training session titled "First Line Supervision, Leadership, and Management Skills" in Indianapolis, from Jan. 20-22. Cost is $275. The council approved the training classes and agreed to pay the fee.
In financial matters, the council agreed to a change order increase of $8,845 for Niblock Excavating, and also agreed to release the sum of $150,792.30 to Niblock for work on the Catherine Street project. This figure is 90 percent payment on the total contract price.
The accounts payable voucher register for December was approved as presented.
Milford Town Council members are Gary Hurd, Robert Cockburn and Douglas Ruch.
