MILFORD - Milford Town Council opened its February meeting with an announcement concerning this year's Milford Fest.

Council members also discussed information regarding the upcoming 2010 Census and adopted an ordinance dealing with financial matters from last year.

Tricia Gall, representing the Milford Lions Club, announced Milford Fest is May 29. Main Street will be closed starting May 28 so that rides can be set up. The Kiwanis will host a breakfast, and there will be a police raffle. Other events will be announced as the festival draws near.

The question of allowing a beer garden was raised, as it was last year. However, the council decided not to have alcohol sales as part of Milford Fest. Anyone wanting to volunteer, or for further information, call Gall at 574-658-4498.[[In-content Ad]]Milford Fire Department will conduct their bi-annual fundraiser beginning next month. Representatives from Midwest Portrait will be canvassing door-to-door soliciting for donations to the fire department, in exchange for an 8-by-10 portrait. Midwest Portrait personnel will have proper identification and will be setting up times for photos sessions. The fire department will handle all finances.

In other fire department business, the department thanked the council for assistance in acquiring new radios, which have been ordered.

Milford Town Marshal Rich Miotto brought several items of police business before the council. Twenty-one individuals have applied for the current open position on the local force, and Miotto said that of that number, seven are possible candidates. Only one candidate is interested in reserve officer status, while the rest want a full-time position. The council will begin conducting the review process of each application and will be scheduling times to meet with each individual applicant.

Miotto also announced that the Kosciusko County Coalition on Drug Education awarded the department a $3,000 grant toward the purchase of an on-board camera for the 2007 patrol car. The total cost for the camera is actually $4,250, however, Miotto said he will be seeking other grant possibilities to help make up the difference.

The 2010 U.S. Census is soon to start, and Miotto presented information provided through the Better Business Bureau concerning what can be expected.

Guidelines presented include the following:

n U.S. Census workers will have proper ID, along with a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and badge. Never invite someone into your home if you're not comfortable with them.

n Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card number, or any banking information to anyone, even if they claim it's needed for the Census.

n No matter what anyone asks, you only need to tell them how many people live at your address.

n You don't have to answer any questions regarding your financial situation.

n Also, remember that the U.S. Census Bureau has decided not to work with ACORN on gathering this information. No ACORN worker should approach you, saying he/she is with the U.S. Census Bureau.

n The U.S. Census Bureau will not contact you by e-mail. Because of e-mail scams misrepresenting the Census, never click on a link or open any attachments that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Utilities Superintendent Dallas Winchester presented the council with information regarding a study that should be conducted to help verify/justify any possible water and sewer rate increase within the next three to four years. Umbaugh and Associates can do a detailed assessment on both water and waste water costs for $10,000. Winchester was adamant in stating that this is only a rate study at this time, and not an increase in rates.

Because of specific projects that will need to be completed within that time frame, the council approved this expenditure.

In other utility department business, the council approved department employees to attend a mosquito control meeting March 2, and a March 3 water/wastewater workshop, both in Fort Wayne.

In other business, the council:

n Approved a transfer of funds. This is a necessary procedure to pay leftover bills from 2009.

n Approved the parks caretaker to have an inside dog at his residence.

n Approved the accounts payable voucher register for the previous month as presented.

Milford Town Council members are Gary Hurd, Robert Cockburn and Douglas Ruch.
