Michael P. Fitzgerald, 63, of Warsaw, passed away at 9 p.m. May 16, 2013, in his residence. He was born Feb. 8, 1950, in Chicago, Ill., to Gerald and Peg O’Sheah Fitzgerald. On Dec. 18, 1988, in Dupage County, Ill., he married Sandra Herner, who survives in Warsaw. He served in the U.S. Army as a captain with the First Calvary from 1972-78. He was a helicopter pilot. He also received his master’s degree at Texas A&M and his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Northern Illinois University. He worked for Zombie Retirement Nation as an author and then worked for Follett Education Service as director for 15 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 253, North Webster; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126, Warsaw; Fungi; First Calvary Association; and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw. He also was involved with Barbee Pirates, Vets 2 Grads and Wounded Warrior Project. He loved Civil War history, military history, his family and his dog. Also surviving are a son, Michael J. (and spouse Margaret) Fitzgerald, Houston, Texas; a daughter, Kathleen (and spouse Gene) Ward, Crown Point; a stepdaughter, Cherylann Kalabsa, LaSalle, Ill.; two stepsons, Allen J. Kalabsa, Warsaw, and Michael J. (and spouse Kim) Kalabsa, El Paso, Texas; two sisters, Peggy (and spouse Robert) Bacarro, Bartlett, Ill., and Rose Mary Nowiski, Bradley, Ill; six grandchildren: Anderson, Finn, Liam, Heidi, Phoebe and Shane; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Fitzgerald. A mass of christian burial will be at 10 a.m. May 25 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw, with Father Phil DeVolder officiating. Military honors will follow at the church. Calling is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with a rosary at 8 p.m. ***** Memorials may be made to The Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, KS 66675.
