Eldred Metzger and Elaine Call were inducted into the Kosciusko County Republican Hall of Fame Thursday.

Metzger, a long-time Jackson Township precinct committeeman, also served as Jackson Township trustee in 1966. He resigned that post when he was elected to the Whitko School board in 1968. He served as vice president of the board during construction of Whitko High School and additions to Pierceton Middle School.

He served numerous times as a delegate to the state Republican convention.

In 1974, he was elected to the Kosciusko County Council as the Fourth District representative, and was selected president of that board. A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, he operated a 247-acre farm as well as the Service Center at the intersection of Ind. 13 and Ind. 14.

Elaine Call, Warsaw's clerk-treasurer, also was recognized at the Hall of Fame Dinner at 2517 Restaurant. Call has served in this capacity since 1988.

Call, a lifelong Warsaw resident, attended Ball State University, served as president of the Kosciusko County Republican Women's Club, is a "Tribute to Women" honoree through the Indiana Federation of Republican Women, member of the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks & Treasurers and member of Women of the Moose.

When accepting her award, she described herself as someone who likes to stay behind the scenes.

Jean Northenor, who presented the awards, described the honorees as "conservative, dedicated, willing, innovative and not afraid to stand alone."

Candidate for governor Mitch Daniels was speaker for the event. He is the former director of the Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush, serving in that capacity from January 2001 until June 2003.

"My view of public service is that politics is a vital and worthwhile pursuit but not a viable career," Daniels said. "The heart of politics is part-time volunteers who give back, take part, but whose real life lies elsewhere."

Daniels has visited 89 out of 92 counties since announcing his intentions July 1 to seek the state's highest office.

Daniels told a couple of stories to illustrate his theme of how "little platoons" flourish and operate.

One story centered around a woman named Janice Wilson, a former Newton county assessor. She was a member of a senior citizens band and invited Daniels to practice.

Daniels accepted the invitation to conduct the group's rendition of a John Phillip Sousa march.

When he took his leave, a voice asked this question: "When you're elected governor, can we play at your inaugural?"

Of course, the self-described "rookie" candidate answered. "Yes."

Daniels said Wilson died shortly after their meeting and he got to know her family and friends.

"And that's why I'm running for governor, for people like Janice," he said. "In a state where people give of themselves to protect these marvelous little communities."

Daniels is a resident of Indianapolis, married to Cheri. The couple have four daughters: Megan, Melissa, Meredith and Maggie.

He began his public service career working for Indianapolis Mayor Richard Lugar, then served as Lugar's chief of staff during the U.S. Senator's first eight years in office. He was a senior adviser of President Ronald Reagan's White House staff.

In addition to the OMB directorship, Daniels was the only Bush cabinet member to serve on the senior White House team and was a member of the National Security and the Homeland Security councils.

In Indiana, he was CEO of the Hudson Institute and headed the Eli Lilly and Co. North American pharmaceutical business, a post he held for several years before being promoted to the company's most senior management committee. [[In-content Ad]]
