NORTH MANCHESTER – Merle V. Alderfer, 84, of Laketon, died at 8:38 a.m. April 25, 2012, in his residence.

He was born March 6, 1928, in Laketon, to Carl M. and Ruth J. Ault Alderfer. On Oct. 18, 1950, he married Julia M. Coleman, who survives.

He was an asphalt road construction worker, retiring from Rieth-Riley Asphalt, Fort Wayne. He was a member of Operator Engineer Union 103, Fort Wayne; a life member and past governor of Moose Lodge 1518, North Manchester; and a life member of Tippecanoe Fellowship 96.

Surviving are a son, Jack L. Alderfer, Servia; four daughters: Pamela Bowman, North Manchester; Brenda (and Larry) Weaver, Goshen; Tammie (and spouse Robert) Funk, Akron; and Susie Elliott, Syracuse; two brothers, Howard Alderfer, Warsaw, and Wayne Alderfer, Cromwell; three sisters, Mary Bruce and Ruby (and spouse Bill)   Thompson, Mentone, and Phyllis (and spouse Don)   Shuster, Laporte; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers, a sister and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Laketon Cemetery.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
