MENTONE - Sewer rates in Mentone will be going up over the next year.

During the Mentone Town Council meeting Monday night, the council approved an increase in the sewer rates in two phases. The increase is to help pay for the new sewer treatment plant.[[In-content Ad]]The first increase will be as soon as possible, possibly by May. The second increase will be after the new sewer plant is completed, expected to be in 2011.

Town Clerk-Treasurer Barb Ross will contact financial consultants Umbaugh & Associates about getting the process started for increasing the rates.

Currently, the town's minimum sewer rate is $14.26 for 2,000 gallons a month. The new minimum will be $20.01, Ross said.

Council President Tim Croy announced the town received a check for $50,000 from Forrest D. Miner and family. The money is to be used for operating expenses and/or capital improvements at Mentzer Park.

"That was very nice," said councilman Jack Simpson.

"Wonderful," said Jill Gross, councilwoman.

Town Marshal Jim Eads reported the new truck for the police department has been ordered from Dimension Ford. It reportedly was being built starting Monday. Eads hopes to take possession of it next week.

The old truck will be bidded out in February, Eads said. The Kelly Blue Book value on it is about $4,600.

Eric Carlin, utilities superintendent, said that he hopes the new dump truck for his department will be in by the end of the month.

Croy said he received an anonymous letter to the town council. The letter requests the town upgrade its Web site. Croy said the town does not have a Web site, but the Chamber of Commerce does. The letter will be forwarded to the Chamber.

Eads asked the town council if the conservation officers may use the Mentone Community Emergency Services Building Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a regional meeting. He said there will be about 10 officers and they may not use the building for the entire four hours. The council approved for them to use the building.

The council also approved for Carlin and utilities employee Josh Shepherd to attend a conference Feb. 16-18.
