Mentone Town Marshal Jim Eads told the town council Monday night that his department and Cargill partnered together to present a bike safety class Friday for local first-graders at Mentone Elementary.
“It will be a yearly thing they want to do with all the first-graders coming in. I think that’s a good thing,” Eads said.
During the presentation, one boy’s and one girl’s names were randomly drawn out of a bowl by Principal Angie Miller to receive a free bike. The winning students were Ava Smith and Brason Smith.
After the presentation and demonstration, all first-graders were given a safety bike helmet to take home.
Officer Terry S. Engstrand said Cargill gave away 78 bicycle helmets. Cargill also paid for the two bikes.
The police department and Cargill hope the program will help keep the children safe and prevent a serious injury as they ride their bikes in the local community, according to a press release provided.
In another matter, Utilities Superintendent Josh Shepherd said he plans to flush hydrants Wednesday and Thursday. Leaf pick-up will run from Oct. 15 through Thanksgiving.
Council President Tim Croy announced Halloween trick-or-treat will be Oct. 31 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The Chamber of Commerce will have costume judging at 7 p.m. at Mentone Elementary School.
He thanked the Tippecanoe Valley High School students for their community service at the cemetery Thursday.
“We appreciate what they did,” he said.
Before the regular town council meeting, Croy and councilwoman Shelly Krueger approved the 2013 budget as advertised. Councilwoman Jill Gross was not present at the meeting.
A public hearing on the town’s budget was Sept. 10, with no remonstrators.[[In-content Ad]]
