Mentone OKs Zoning for Firearms Business

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

MENTONE – A Mentone man can perform gun ownership transfers out of his residence after the town council Monday approved a zoning board recommendation.
Council  President Tim Croy said he previously had a phone conversation with Adam Wood, and he referred Wood to the zoning board.
Wood is applying for a Federal Firearms License and wants to operate a home-based business to transfer gun ownerships, Croy said. Wood resides at 203 N. Elm St., Mentone, which is currently zoned industrial, according to Croy.
“Basically, I’m just going to be transferring firearms,” Wood informed the board. “I’m not going to have any kind of inventory or selling any ammunition at the residence. Basically, if someone needs a firearm, they order it online or something. They need someone to transfer that and do the background check and that stuff, and then give them that firearm. That’s really about the extent of my business there.”
He said he has a big vault that the guns will be stored in.
“There’s not going to be really any inventory on site. Just someone says, ‘Hey, can you get this gun for me at least?’ Then I can find that gun, but I’m not going to be dumping a lot of money to have a store front. Don’t need any kind of extra parking or anything like that,” Wood said.
Councilwoman Shelly Krueger asked Wood if he did background checks. He said he did the background checks through the ATF, but if a person wants a gun permit they still had to go through Indiana State Police.
“Basically, I just do the background check with the ATF to make sure the person can even own the gun in the first place. Then we just do the transfer that way,” Wood said.
Croy said Wood has gone through all the steps of filing for his Federal Firearms License.
“I have talked to them. They have done their background checks on him,” Croy said.
Wood said he had a four-hour interview at his house. “It was pretty extensive,” he said.
The zoning board approved the business at Wood’s residence, Croy said, and it was up to the town council to accept or deny the zoning board’s recommendation.
Croy made the motion to approve it. The council unanimously approved the motion.
“You’re good to go,” Croy told Wood.
Also during the meeting, Town Marshal Jim Eads informed the board that reserve officer Bryce Good graduated Saturday from the Kosciusko County Reserve Academy.
“It was a real nice ceremony for him. He also won an extra award up there that was picked by the trainers for firearm safety and marksmanship,” Eads said. “It was the Terry Swoverland Award. I was real happy with that.”
“Congratulations,” Croy told Good.
Swoverland died June 4, 2013. He was a reserve officer for the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department for 13 years, obtaining the rank of lieutenant, and a firearms instructor, according to his obituary.
After the meeting, Eads said that as chief, it made him very pleased that the instructors picked Good for the award. He said there were 13 guys in the reserve academy from different counties.
In another matter, Croy announced spring clean-up in Mentone is May 13.
“And they can check with (Clerk-Treasurer) Barb (Ross) on what they can not put out,” he said.
Later, Croy said now is the time of year for residents to get their yards mowed and junk vehicles either plated and insured or removed.
“PD, I’m sure, will be knocking on doors or hanging tags; and they usually get all upset with the PD for doing that and that is actually town board if they want to complain. They can complain to us, but it’s the time of the year that people need to start getting that stuff done and stay on top of that. We shouldn’t be the ones to remind them that yards need mowed and junk vehicles and trash need to be gotten rid of,” Croy said.
“And with that,” Eads said, “just a reminder that the town only has one big trash day a year. The spring one here. If they need to get anything out for the year, it needs to happen for this (May 13) event.  Anything after this event coming up, sitting out on the street, they’ll have to pay out of their own pocket to have it removed.”
The town pays extra to have the spring clean-up, he said.
In other business, the council:
• Heard Krueger was still working on the town employee policies. She had presented the council with revised copies at the April meeting.
• Heard from Utilities Superintendent Josh Shepherd that he will try to flush fire hydrants May 11.
• Reminded the public that there will be a Memorial Day program at the old cemetery at 2 p.m. May 24.
• Approved the claims and the minutes from the April meeting.
• Heard from Ross that “budget time is soon approaching. Get your thinking caps on.”[[In-content Ad]]
