Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies, along with Claypool officers, responded to the area of Palestine Lake Saturday in attempt to serve two active warrants on Matthew Dillan Mahaska, 20, Mentone.
Officers located Mahaska walking along CR 600W near Blue Jay Drive at approximately 7:02 p.m. Officers had detained and handcuffed Mahaska, as well as locating several stolen items in his possession, when he suddenly turned and ran back toward homes near Palestine Lake.
Officers immediately chased Mahaska through various yards until apprehending him on the ground a short distance from their squad cars.
Officers were originally serving active warrants on Mahaska for felony theft as well as felony failure to appear, but added preliminary charges of resisting/fleeing law enforcement and possession of paraphernalia. Mahaska is currently located in the Kosciusko County Jail on a $17,500 bond.
KCSD detectives also stated that Mahaska’s arrest on Saturday night has provided information to his involvement with a burglary in the Burket area in recent weeks. Detectives stated that additional charges are possible for that incident.
