MENTONE - Two steps forward and one step back.

That's what it seems like for the Mentone Police Department.

After eight months with only one police officer in town, a deputy marshal was hired in February. Tom Craft served his last day for the town on Saturday, ending his four-month career there. Craft has accepted a position at the Kosciusko County Jail.

Marshal Jim Eads told the Mentone Town Council Monday night that he will start the search for a deputy all over again.

Starting pay for a deputy marshal is $22,000, with bonuses awarded after 90 days, after successful completion of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and after six months probation, making it possible for a deputy marshal to earn up to $24,000 per year.

In another police matter, a bicycle registration program is being undertaken at the police department. Residents wanting to have information on their bicycles on file with the police can contact Eads with as much information as possible about the bicycle, such as year, make, model, etc.

The registration, for which there is no charge, includes a numbered sticker being affixed to the bicycle.

In other business, the council adopted the salary ordinance for 2000.

Annual salaries are as follows: council president, $1,800; council members, $1,700; clerk-treasurer, $22,625; town marshal, $29,800; deputy marshal, $24,000; utilities superintendent, $32,465; street superintendent, $31,625.

Hourly employees will be paid $6 to $8 per hour.

In other matters, the council:

• Voted to donate $500 to Kosciusko Development Inc. Two representatives of KDI provided information on the organization and explained that much of their $70,000-per-year budget relies upon donations from communities.

• Approved up to $1,000 for election administration services for the upcoming general election; up to $2,500 for repair of the hydraulic pump on the town's blue utility tractor - the work will be done by New Holland of Rochester; and up to $1,500 for security lights around the parking lot at the park.

• Gave utilities superintendent Brian Reed permission to purchase 1,000 door hangers at a cost of $190.20. The brightly colored tags will be for hanging notices of meter reading, utility shut off or other utility department information a resident who is not at home would need to know.

It was announced that the Mentone Cemetery Board will meet at 6 p.m. July 22 in the town hall.

The next regular council meeting is at 7 p.m. Aug. 2, a budget hearing is set for 6 p.m. Aug. 23 and budget adoption will be at 6:45 p.m. Sept. 13. All meetings take place in the town hall. [[In-content Ad]]
