Memorial Day Observances Planned Throughout County

Memorial Day is Monday with services planned throughout the three-day weekend in the county.

The annual Memorial Day services in Warsaw will be conducted Monday at Oakwood Cemetery by John C. Peteson American Legion Post 49, James Sittler Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126 and Michael G. O'Connell American Veterans Post 43.

The Color Guards, firing squad and other organizational units will form on Maple Avenue just outside the cemetery gate. The march into the cemetery will begin at 11 a.m. Any units that want to participate in the march into the cemetery should report at the gate by 10:30 a.m.

The program at the cemetery bandstand will include special instrumental music by the Warsaw Community High School band; posting of colors by the American Legion, VFW and AmVets color guards; Pledge of Allegiance by all present; national anthem by the WCHS band; invocation by the Rev. Milton Gould; memorial address by Larry Lowery, past Second District Commander of American Legion and member of Walton American Legion Post 418; roll call of deceased veterans; benediction by Gould; and retiring of colors by the combined color guards.

After the colors have been retired, the program will proceed to the Grand Army of the Republic Circle and the new American Legion Circle where a simultaneous presentation of wreath(s) will be made by the auxiliary president(s) of both the American Legion and the VFW. After the presentations, the American Legion firing squad will render a salute, followed by "Taps."

The program will be concluded at the original American Legion Circle where a wreath will also be presented along with the guard salute and "Taps."

In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held at the American Legion home on North Buffalo Street.

In North Webster, American Legion Herbert Kuhn Post 253 will begin their military ceremony activities at 10 a.m. at Mock Cemetery and then at the Post, Ind. 13, at 10:30 a.m. The Post will meet up at the parade at 10:45 a.m. and end at 11 a.m. at the North Webster Cemetery where more military ceremonies will be held.

Syracuse's Memorial Day parade will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday and will travel down Huntington Street to the cemetery. The road will be closed from Medusa to Main streets.

American Legion Post 223, Syracuse, services will then be held at the cemetery.

Lineup for Milford's parade begins at 9 a.m. with the actual parade beginning at 10 a.m. After the parade, military services will be held at the Milford Cemetery. Also after the parade, Milford Area Development will have their annual barbecue. All weekend in Milford, there will be yard and garage sales.

For Leesburg, all children should have their decorated bicycles at the town hall at 10:15 a.m. for judging. Prizes will be awarded for the top three winners in different categories. All other parade entries should line up on North Pearl Street, with the parade beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The parade route includes traveling down Van Buren Street and then on Jefferson Street, down Prairie Street to the Leesburg Cemetery. A ceremony will then be held at 11 a.m. at the cemetery.

Mentone's Memorial Day service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the circle in the cemetery.

There will be a short parade from the "egg" uptown to the cemetery. Tippecanoe Valley High School band and Warsaw American Legion Post 49 will march along with a group of Boy and Girl Scouts, American Legion and Auxiliary members and others.

In Winona Lake, a Volkswalk 10K walk will begin at the visitor's center, 8 a.m. to noon Saturday; Wawasee select choir will be in Artisan Court 1 p.m. and the Winona Lake Fire Department car wash is 8 to 11 a.m.

Dewart Lake will host a patriotic flotilla Sunday at 2 p.m. with a rain date of Monday at 2 p.m.

The flotilla will give residents of Dewart Lake a chance to show support for not only America's veterans, but also for the U.S. military, firefighters, police and emergency personnel. The patriotic theme should be shown on each boat with flags, balloons or by any other creative means.

Anyone interested in participating in the flotilla should call Larry Gill at 658-9332. Entries should gather in the bay near the public landing on the day of the flotilla. The flotilla will circle the entire lake in a clockwise rotation and will leave promptly at 2 p.m. [[In-content Ad]]
