He was born Oct. 28, 1928, in Glo, Ky., to Joe P. and Ella Young Miller. On Jan. 18, 1947, in Prestonsburg, Ky., he married Thelma Stephens, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 7, 1987, in Burket, he married Emma Jean Layne Perkins, who survives.
He lived in Manton and Hueysville, Ky., South Whitley and Burket. He worked in coal mines, at a boat factory, Dalton Foundries, a trailer factory, Johnson Brothers Sign Co. and Gripco Co. He enjoyed coon hunting, working with electronics and tinkering with old lawn mowers.
Also surviving are five daughters: Anna Jean (and spouse Lorenza) Hurd, Mentone; Arlene (and spouse Larry) Sroufe, Larwill; Gloria (and spouse Ron) Dafforn, Columbia City; Gale (and spouse Larry) Burkhart, Warsaw; and Saundra (and spouse Jack) Ott, Estero, Fla.; four sons: Melvin Jr. (and spouse Jean) Miller, Pierceton; Micheal Miller (and Pauline Haynes), Wabash; Arthur Miller (and Linda Colter) Columbia City; and Rick (and spouse Kristy) Miller, South Whitley; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Faye Roecker, Marion, Ohio; Shirley Dingus, Martin, Ky.; and Darla Hicks, Morral, Ohio; seven step-grandchildren: Ralph, Toni, John, Jackie, Donna, Lisa and Kevin; 15 step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Arthur Miller; a sister, Marie Smith; and a grandson, Tommy Miller.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Freewill Baptist Church of Kosciusko County with Pastor Terry Bradford officiating. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery.
Calling is from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, 2290 Provident Court, Warsaw.
