He was born Sept. 6, 1923, in Clunette, to James Melvin and Martha Ann Wyland Konkle. On Aug. 31, 1943, in Warsaw, he married Edith “Ina” Moore, who died Feb. 8, 2014.
They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, he served as a mechanic in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the European-African Theater. He served from Feb. 17, 1943, and was discharged in 1945, receiving the rank of sergeant.
He was a member of the Claypool United Methodist Church; a 50-year member of the Warsaw Masonic Lodge #83; and a member of the Fort Wayne Valley Scottish Rite, the Mizpah Shrine Temple, Fort Wayne, the Order of Eastern Star 88 and Kosciusko County Shrine Club, both of Warsaw. He was also a member of the Claypool Lions Club and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #49 and VFW Post #1126, both of Warsaw. He worked for the Indiana Highway Department as a mechanic and retired in 1986 from Bristol Myers, where he was machinist and a tool and die maker.
He is survived by his two sons, Dan (and spouse Clara) Konkle, Herber Springs, Ark., and Gale (and spouse Nancy) Konkle, Logansport; eight grandchildren: Jonathon, David, Michael, Douglas, Brad, Eric and Joel Konkle; and Carey Waters; and nine great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a son, George, who died in 1986, and 11 siblings.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor Michael Settles of Claypool United Methodist Church officiating. Burial is in Graceland Cemetery, Claypool.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, followed by a Masonic service at 7 p.m. conducted by the Warsaw Masonic #83.
