He was born Jan. 26, 1940, in Beaver Dam, to Melvin Eugene Sr. and Ella Laverne Walters Keplinger.
On May 30, 1960, in New Orleans, he married Judith A. Walker, who died Sept. 7, 1994. On Aug. 25, 1995, in Warsaw, he married Mary Lou Zimmer, who survives in Warsaw.
He was a 1958 graduate of Mentone High School. He entered the United States Army June 4, 1958, in Indianapolis. SP4 Melvin Eugene Keplinger Jr. was honorably discharged May 23, 1961, from Camp Leroy Johnson in Louisiana.
He was a lifetime Kosciusko County resident. He was an Indiana State Trooper for 28 years, retiring in 1991 as a detective.
He was a member of American Legion Post 49, enjoyed gardening and working in the yard, and was an avid baseball fan.
Also surviving are three daughters: Brenda (and spouse Mike) Smith and Michelle (and spouse Chad) Larsh, all of Warsaw; and Daphne (and spouse Tim) Myers, Holland, Mich.; a son, Melvin E. Keplinger III, Warsaw; a sister, Mary (and spouse Paul) Weirick, Silver Lake; a stepson, Robert (and spouse Diane) Bills, Warsaw; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with Pastor Steve Ailes, Walnut Creek United Methodist Church, Warsaw, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by Warsaw’s American Legion Post 49 and VFW Post 1126.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
