MedStat Bill

My husband recently got a small scrape on his leg while walking around the farm. There was a little rust on the metal he scraped it on. My son-in-law suggested that since we couldn’t remember when he had his last tetanus shot, that he should probably get one just to be safe at his age. It was a Sunday and our family doctor was closed. He decided to go to MedStat. He told them that he would like a tetanus shot. The doctor put some surgical scrub and basically liquid band-aid on it. The nurse came in and gave him the shot. He showed them our insurance card, and said they would file it and send us a bill for the balance. When the bill came I thought I was going to have to take my husband to KCH for a heart attack.
Total of $495, $297 for a repair of superficial wound, surgical scrub and basically liquid band-aid, $25 for the nurse to come in and give him the shot, $56 for the shot and $117 for the office visit. I called MedStat billing and asked what the $297 for repair of the superficial wound was. She basically said the surgical scrub and the equivalent of liquid band-aid on his scrape. I told her I was going to talk to our insurance company, Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Anthem) and probably write a letter to the editor of the Times-Union to warn others. She then offers us a 20 percent discount if we just paid the balance in full. I called our doctor after that and asked that a tetanus shot cost. They said just the cost of the tetanus shot and the office visit, which would be paid in full by our insurance company as “preventative care”
So F.Y.I. if you are due for a tetanus shot, which is good for seven years, get an appointment with your family doctor, they’ll file with your insurance company and chances are you won’t pay a penny.
