Today's Question: The wrinkles on my face are starting to bother me. What are the options to treat them?
Hannah, Warsaw.

A. That is a very common concern, Hannah. There are several treatment options available to scare those wrinkles away without having to have surgery.

One option to treat the fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes (commonly referred to as smile lines or crow's feet), the frown lines in between your eyes and the expression lines in your forehead is with an injectable medication such as Botox® or Dysport®.

These medications help relax the muscles and soften the wrinkles. Many women fear losing their expression or looking unnatural.

After receiving the treatment, you will still be able to smile, frown, and look natural. We have all seen the look of Hollywood, but in the Midwest, we strive for a more natural look.

The goal of Botox or Dysport is to reduce wrinkles without others noticing you have had any treatments.

The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes and there is no downtime afterward.

Many patients have it done over their lunch hour and return to work immediately after.

You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The treatment must be repeated every three to four months to keep up the results.

A second treatment option is a laser procedure called Pearl Fractional®. Pearl Fractional is designed to treat fine lines and deep wrinkles associated with photo damage as opposed to wrinkles caused from frowning or smiling.

This treatment stimulates the body's own natural process for creating new collagen, plumping the skin from below and reversing photo aging and other imperfections. Removing only a small portion, or a “fraction,” of the skin ensures a safe treatment with a rapid recovery.

A third way to battle those fine lines and wrinkles, if you are not ready for injectables or laser treatments, is by using a topical anti-aging serum twice a day. Look for one that contains anti-aging peptides to stimulate the growth of new collagen and firm and strengthen the dermis, which will help reduce the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles. Most importantly, wear your sunscreen 365 days a year!

Talk to your medical skin care professional about the best plan for you, Hannah. Those wrinkles will be scared away before all the Halloween candy in your house is gone!
