The McKinley Park Neighborhood Spring Fling event is April 20 at 11 a.m. at McKinley Park.
The event is for residents who live in the areas of Detroit to Harrison streets and Center Street to Pike Lake.
The event will include $1 hot dogs, a pot luck picnic, corn hole, ladder golf, Jumbo Scrabble and sidewalk chalk.
Attendees can vote on a flag design. It is hoped that the area will have flags to hang on light poles to identify the neighborhood which will give people a sense of pride in their neighborhood, according to organizer Tim Dombrovsky.
Dombrosky, assistant city planner and McKinley Park neighborhood resident, said the event is to get people involved in the neighborhood and meet one another.
Dombrosky, who is a Kosciusko Leadership Academy graduate, said his White Paper project was to establish neighborhood identity and pride in the community.
“There are strong ties in the neighborhood already, but I want to make it more broader and open to the neighbors,” Dombrosky said.
Dombrosky said a possible idea is to display pennant flags on light posts in the neighborhood to identify McKinley Park and give pride to those who live there.
“I think when neighborhoods are organized and connected we can communicate more easily,” Dombrosky said.
He said this is a pilot program for what he hopes will become a larger effort throughout the city,
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer applauded Dombrosky for the project.
“A big part of neighborhood revitalization is getting neighborhoods organized,” Thallemer said.
Thallemer said as the city plans for revitalization projects such as greenways and bike paths the organization of neighborhoods is critical to implement these projects.
