BOURBON – Maxine R. Hayes, 91, of the Bourbon and Plymouth area, passed away at 12:23 a.m. July 15, 2012, in Bremen Health Care Center.

She was born Nov. 27, 1920, in Bourbon, to Ralph and Bessie Marie Ames Hanes. On April 14, 1945, he married Thomas J. Hayes Sr., who died April 19, 1974.

She was a homemaker and had worked and retired from Ristance  Wire Co., Bremen. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, handy crafts, gardening, going to the spa, sulky horse racing and spending time with her family.

She was a long-time resident of the Bourbon area until she moved to her home in River Park, Plymouth,  where she was close to her siblings. She was a 1939 graduate of Bourbon High School.

Surviving are four children: Rita (and spouse Thomas) Madden and James Hayes, all of Indianapolis; Debra Snooks, Syracuse; and Tom (and spouse Becky) Hayes, Bourbon; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Helen Neidig and Julia Umbaugh,  both of Plymouth; Barbara Jean Rogers, Goshen; and Carol (and spouse Ray) Hunt, Indianapolis; a brother, Ralph Hanes, New York, N.Y.; and brother-in-law, Eldon Swank, Bremen. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Snooks, and two sisters, Dorothy Swank and Martha Rusher.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bourbon.

Calling is from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
