NAPPANEE - Max J. Quakenbush, 86, of 27173 Tecumseh Drive, Nappanee, died at 1:15 p.m. June 25, 2007, in Miller's Merry Manor, Wakarusa.

He was born Sept. 16, 1920, in Beloit, Kan., to Harry and Nelda Brown Quakenbush. On July 21, 1945, in Chicago, Ill., he married Marguerite "Marge" Govanus, who survives.

Living in Nappanee since 1967, he was a graduate of Beloit (Kan.) High School and managed Power Manufacturing, Nappanee, for Dodge Manufacturing. He was a B-17 bomber pilot in World War II. He was a prisoner of war for 15 months in Barth, Germany. He retired as lieutenant colonel after 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and served in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of Nappanee United Methodist Church and a past member and president of Nappanee Noon Kiwanis Club. He served two terms on the Wa-Nee School Board and two years as Union Township trustee. He was past president of ADEC in Elkhart County. He was a Mason.

Also surviving are a son, Steven Quakenbush, Canyon City, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. Ken (Jill) Johnson, Rock Springs, Wyo; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son and two brothers.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Nappanee United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Harrold officiating. There will be cremation and burial will be at a later date in Rice Cemetery, Elkhart.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
