He was born May 20, 1922, in Goshen, to Ora and Grace Snell Armey. On Feb. 4, 1946, in Fort Wayne, he married Mary Ellen Winger, who survives.
He was the sanitation officer of Wabash County for 24 years, retiring in 1984. He joined the Army in January 1940, and served 5-1/2 years. He drove an amphibian tank on Normandy Beach on D-Day and was missing in action 23 days. After the war ended, he joined the National Guard and attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga., for 14-1/2 weeks. He served six years as 2nd Lieutenant in the Guard.
He was a member of Congregational Christian Church, North Manchester; a member and past master of Wabash Hanna Masonic Lodge 61 F&AM the Knight of York Cross of Honor, the Chapter, Council and Commandry, Peru; Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine; Wabash Shrine Club; Ivy Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, North Manchester; a member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 286, Wabash; American Legion 15, Wabash; North Manchester Moose Lodge; and Retired Indiana Public Employees Association. He was a former member and past patron of Wabash Order of the Eastern Star.
Also surviving are three daughters, Sheryl K. (and spouse Stephen) Carter and Lu Ann (and spouse David) Wendel, both of North Manchester, and Cinda (and spouse Dennis) Deal, Franklin; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Marvin (and spouse Florence) Armey, North Manchester; and a sister, Mildred Miller, Andrews. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester, with Pastor J.P. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Ulrey Cemetery.
Calling is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m.
