He was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Chester Township, Wabash County, to Orville E. Sr. and Anna Brendice Currens Howard. On June 25, 1942, in North Manchester, he married Marietta Hanley, who died Aug. 26, 2006.
He was a 1940 graduate of Chester Township High School. He worked several years for Miller and Sons, Silver Lake; Lumbermans, Fort Wayne; and retired from Frantz Lumber, North Manchester, in 1988. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of North Manchester United Methodist Church. He enjoyed reading, gardening and all sports. He lived in Greenwood since November 2009.
Surviving are four children: Carolyn (and spouse Allan) Rife, Jeffersonville; Dan (and spouse Fran) Howard, Michigan City; Barbara (and spouse Terry) Murphy, Indianapolis; and Virginia Howard, Rochester; two brothers, Orville E. Howard Jr., Frankfort, and Joseph Howard, Roann; a sister, Patricia Young, Wabash; six grandchildren: Monica (and spouse Joe) Allen, Greenwood; Aimee (and spouse Charles) Fields, New Albany; Jeremy Rife, Jeffersonville; Luke (and spouse Staci) Murphy, Bloomington; Jennifer Schultz and Ann (and spouse Kyle) Newburn, all of Michigan City; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Howard; four sisters, Margaret Barnes, Mary Cline, Josephine Pankop and Betty June Howard; and a great-grandson, Norwood Lee Allen.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at North Manchester United Methodist Church, 306 E. 2nd St., North Manchester, with the Rev. Kevin DeKoninck officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Servia.
Calling is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester, is in charge of arrangements.
