Mason, Warsaw Bring Home Medals
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
INDIANAPOLIS - David Hoffert called Saturday's state track and field meet "better than graduation."
Tim Mason went away from the event somewhat disappointed, despite an ironman exhibition in which his undefeated streak in three events, the long jump, the 100 and the 200, came to an end.
Jon Hill and Gregg Seiss called the meet nothing more than a learning experience.
Saturday's IHSAA state track and field meet at Indiana University Track Stadium in Indianapolis ran the gamut of emotions. For most, though, it was the final prize for a year of hard work.
After last year's meet when local athletes failed to win a single medal, just one finish in the top nine would have been an improvement this year. But Mason alone took three medals, while Warsaw's 3,200 relay team took another, and Hill grabbed one more.
For Mason, the first three hours of competition left him exhausted. Whether he was long jumping, running or taking the medal stand to receive another award, he was in perpetual motion. And it eventually wore him down.
In most competitions this year, Mason would get a chance to rest by scratching in the long jump finals. He would normally jump long enough to finish first and then just check in to see if anyone had passed him. He was so far ahead of the field in that event that he never even jumped in the finals at the Kokomo Regional.
But at the state meet, it was a different story and both he and Whitko head coach Ron Cherry knew it would be. Mason was in fifth after the preliminary round with a jump of 22-feet-8. Even though that was a solid leap, it was nowhere near his personal best of 22-11 1/4.
Mason was pretty nervous to begin the meet and Cherry hoped that the time between the prelims and the finals would give him a chance to work out the tension.
After winning his heat of the 100 prelims and placing second in his heat of the 200 prelims, Mason then had to go back to long jump again.
By that point, his legs weren't as strong as in the prelims and it cost him. Mason never jumped past that 22-8 mark and took sixth.
"If I don't do well in those three jumps before I run, I'm in trouble," Mason said. "My legs are pretty bad."
After being seeded fourth in the event coming into the state meet, he was a bit disappointed with that. But the 100 and 200 made up for it.
In the 100, he ran a personal best :10.87 in the prelims and followed that up with a :10.83 in the finals. That was good enough for fourth place, much higher than the No. 12 seed that he entered the meet at.
"The 100 was the biggest surprise," Cherry said after the meet. "We were just hoping that he'd make the finals. I think it was a good thing for him to finish that high. It gave him a shot of confidence for the 200."
In the 200, Mason once again ran well, placing fourth in the finals. That gave him his third medal of the meet, but Mason still felt like he could have accomplished more.
"I could have gone faster (in the 100)," Mason said between events. "I was bumping the guy next to me. I was expecting a little better."
For Warsaw, the 3200 relay did better than expected time-wise. All week the Tigers talked about how to knock off four seconds from their time at the regional meet, which would put them ahead of Fort Wayne Northrop.
The Tigers actually cut off about five seconds, but still ended fourth after being seeded second. Warsaw's time of 7:53.43 was just short of the state record coming into the meet. However, three teams broke the record, including Northrop. The Bruins ran a stunning 7:48.84 to win the meet.
Hoffert ran a great leg in the relay, taking the baton in fourth place. When he was done, the Tigers were in first. But Warsaw slipped a bit to fall behind Northrop, Goshen and Valparaiso.
"I felt great," Hoffert said. "What we ran would have easily won last year. It feels great to go out like this. This is my true graduation."
Hill also medaled for Warsaw, finishing ninth in the 400. Even though he finished last in his eight-person heat, his time of :49.62 was better than all but one runner in the other three heats.
"It was very tough," Hill said. "I felt pretty good, but it's a little cold and I felt a little tight. It's good to run against these kids and with all of this competition, everyone pushes each other."
Seiss, just a sophomore, ended 12th in his heat of the 800. He came into the meet seeded No. 12, but pushed himself hard on the first lap and it cost him in the end.
"The pace was incredible," Seiss said. "I could have gone out about two seconds slower, but this meet was all about experience."
Warsaw head coach Troy Akers took a moment to reflect on the season that was and to look ahead to the season to come after the meet.
"This was a great culmination to a good season," Akers said. "Of the people that were here, David is the only graduate and he ran a strong leg in the relay. One thing we're going to have to get next year is leadership. We had some very mature seniors. Our juniors will need to step up mentally."
Among other local competitors at the state meet, Manchester's Nick Iden struggled in the hurdles events. In the prelims of the 110 hurdles, he tripped on the final hurdle and placed last in his heat. In the 300 hurdles, he placed 13th overall with a time of :39.22.
Rex Reimer struggled in the long jump, leaping just 20-feet-1 1/2. That put him in 22nd at the meet.
