BOURBON - Mary A. Berger, 89, a resident of Bremen Health Care Facility, formerly of Bourbon, passed away at 11:03 a.m. Aug. 1, 2009, in Bremen Community Hospital.

She was born Jan. 29, 1920, in Plymouth County, Iowa, to Walter and Fredie Scott Sponseller. On Jan. 29, 1945, (her birthday), she married Paul A. Berger, who died in 1956.

She was a resident of the Bourbon area for most of her life. She was a homemaker, and also worked at Dillingham's Clothing Store and retired from Orthopedic Equipment Company in 1983. She was a member of the Bourbon First United Methodist Church, formerly a member of the Bourbon Homemaker's Club and Bourbon Progress Club. She had a passion for animals, particularly her dog, Keisha, and her cats. She liked to crochet.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol (and spouse Carl) Butgereit, Bremen; two sons, Michael (and spouse Linda) Berger, Warsaw, and Kris (and spouse Kimberly) Berger, Bourbon; 11 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and a sister, Betty (and spouse Ted) Carper, Greenville, S.C. She was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Kathy and Lori; a stepson, Robert, and two brothers, Wayne and Bobbie.

A celebration of Mary's life will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Bourbon First United Methodist Church, 204 W. North St., Bourbon. Burial will be at Summit Chapel Cemetery, Bourbon.

Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
