MENTONE - Marion M. "Smitty" Smith, 90, of 507 S. Franklin St., Mentone, died at 10:55 p.m. Dec. 6, 2009, in Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw.

He was born Sept. 25, 1919, in Kosciusko County, to Alphus and Myrtle Brown Smith. On Dec. 24, 1941, in Plymouth, he married D. EvaBelle Brockey, who died Nov. 19, 2008.

He retired from NIPSCO in January 1980 after 33 years. He was a lifetime Mentone resident and graduated from Mentone High School in 1938. He was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran. He served as the former commander of the former Mentone American Legion and was a member of the American Legion, Warsaw.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda (and spouse Stanley) Phillips, Warsaw, and Patsy Ann (and spouse Mike) Deardorff, Kansas City, Kan; four grandchildren: Ranai Smith, Vicki Cook and Jeff Deardorff and Becky Widler; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Delta Smelser, Mentone; and a brother, Frank (and spouse Jerry) Smith, Mentone. He was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with the Rev. Doris Smith officiating. Burial will be in Mentone Cemetery.

Calling is from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
