Mantis Skate Park To Move, Improve
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Warsaw parks superintendent Jon Garber said plans to move Mantis Skate Park "across the street" from the current site will proceed. The facility is in Boggs Industrial Park.
The move was initially planned because Baker Youth Clubs was looking at the skate park site for a new building. The BYC plans have changed, Garber advised the parks department board Tuesday, and the organization is looking at another property.
He said it will be easier to pour the cement foundation and lay the base in the empty lot and then move in the new equipment.
The park opens April 12 for skateboarding and rollerblading activities.
Parks director Larry Plummer Jr. said the new site also offers more space, making it "more park-like," and will allow for expansion.
Garber said plans to install a four-faced clock commemorating the city's 150th anniversary are still in the works, providing an additional $12,000 is found for the project. The Sesquicentennial Committee gave $9,820 and a donation of $6,000 has been received. The clock costs $22,000.
In addition to improvements to Mantis Skate Park and installation of the Sesquicentennial clock, other 2005 projects include: the purchase of a new pickup truck; continued electrical renovations at Central Park; the purchase of lawn equipment; grass seeding at various parks, sealing and striping Boggs Park basketball courts; paving repairs to the Pete Thorn Youth Center north parking lot; and cement and paver block repairs at the Central Park Plaza.
Bill Baldwin was sworn in as a parks board member by Warsaw city councilman Jeff Grose. Baldwin has served since January 2001.
The board also:
• Approved an annual contract with the Kosciusko Community YMCA for $5,000 to provide a summer day camp/child care program at Lucerne Park. Costs are $90 per week per child for YMCA members and the general public from May 25 to Aug. 19.
• Approved an agreement with Tim Lowman to provide vending machines at Center Lake and Pike Lake parks.
Parks board members are Bill Baldwin, Cathy Folk, Toby Sumpter and Steve Haines. John Sadler was absent. [[In-content Ad]]
