Manchester, Wabash EDG Sign Economic Development Pact

NORTH MANCHESTER - North Manchester entered an agreement with the Economic Development Group of Wabash County Wednesday evening.

At its regular meeting Wednesday night, the North Manchester Town Council unanimously approved a motion to sign an 18-month agreement with EDG. The agreement outlines specific duties of the group and specific services that will be provided to the town.[[In-content Ad]]The contract is valid through Dec. 31, 2010, and an identical agreement was approved by the Wabash County commissioners. The Wabash City commissioners will vote on the agreement next week.

The agreement was brought up at the council's June meeting, but action on it was tabled until July so the town's attorney, Matt Mize, could look it over.

In other business, the council:

n Heard that a lightning strike June 9 caused several thousand dollars worth of damage to electronic equipment at the public safety building. Damage was done to the base radio station, the antenna, two radio control consoles in the dispatch area, a printer and the telephone system. Telephones were down and could not be answered from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. that day.

n Heard the police department purchased an identification card maker and will use it to make child identification cards during the Fun Fest Public Safety Day in August. The equipment was purchased using encumbered money and money from donations.

n Opened the two rock salt bids received from Morton Salt and North American Salt. Morton Salt had the lowest bid, at $110.05 per ton, with a minimum purchase of 22 tons. Superintendent of Public Works John Mugford said the town goes through about 50 tons of salt a month for the water plant, and that the bids were about $45 more per ton this year than the last time the town took salt bids.

n Heard that there will be a public hearing for the downtown project July 21 at 5:30 p.m. in the public safety building.

n Appointed Suzanne Siebrase to the park board.
