NORTH MANCHESTER - Two representatives from the Wabash City School Corporation attended the Manchester Community School Board meeting Tuesday to make a presentation.

Since Wabash had a budget surplus of $2 and Manchester had a deficit of $2, the Wabash representatives presented a large $2 lottery-style "check" to the Manchester school board. Then the representatives handed Manchester Schools business manager Steve Shumaker an envelope containing two $1 bills.

The ongoing banter about the $2 started when the the schools received their final budget figures a few weeks ago. News articles and a radio report documented the incident, prompting the "presentation" Tuesday evening.

The board also appointed a new school representative to the library board. Brenda Self will replace Michelle Sorg, who stepped down from the position.

In other business, the board:

• Approved waivers of the seven semester rule for two students. According to the Indiana code, it is permissible for the seventh semester to be waived if it is unlikely the student would remain in school. According to superintendent Diana Showalter, the students in question met the requirements set out in the Indiana code. Both students have completed their course work and passed the Graduation Qualifying Exam.

• Upheld the expulsion of a student that was discussed during an executive session.

• Approved one section of NEOLA board policies and started reviewing another.

• Approved the hiring of Dave Harms, head boys track coach at Manchester High School; Kelly McKee, volunteer assistant track coach at MHS; Ned Bowman, girls assistant track coach at MHS; Josh Wolfe, assistant track coach at MHS; and Jon Hanlon, assistant wrestling coach at Manchester Junior High School.

• Approved an overnight professional leave request for Gwen Mize to attend the State Workshop on Ag Education and Proficiency yesterday in Trafalgar.

• Approved the minutes from the Feb. 1 meeting.

Manchester school board members present at Tuesday's meeting were Sally Krouse, president; Thom Frantz, Kent Terrill, Brian Schilling, Carlye McLaughlin and Brad Perrot. Superintendent is Diana Showalter. Board member Todd Speicher was not present. [[In-content Ad]]
