NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊEither way a Patrick would leave a winner.

On one side of the court sat Bill and Chad Patrick, both coaches at Tippecanoe Valley.

On the other side of the court sat Keaton Patrick, a junior guard at Manchester.

In the end, Keaton got the glory, hitting a huge three-pointer followed by two free throws to help the Squires top his grandfather's team, 51-48.

"It hurts to lose, but I'm happy for Keaton," said Bill Patrick. "He played well and hit a couple big threes from downtown."

But Keaton Patrick was not the only player to step up for Manchester. The Squires saw three players score in double figures as Barry Hicks netted 14, and Jon Cable added 12 to go along with Patrick's 10 points.

However, the outcome of the game was up in the air until the final seconds of play.

Valley took an early lead as Trey Eaton hit the first basket of the night at the 7:29 mark in the first frame.

After Blake Harper knotted the score at 2-all, Eaton sank a trey to put Valley up 5-3.

Then Manchester's Cable hit two straight baskets to give the Squires their first lead of the game, 6-5.

But Eaton answered again with a three-pointer and another basket to put the Vikings in the lead, 10-6.

Then Manchester went on a 9-0 run to end the first quarter with a 15-10 advantage.

Keaton Patrick nailed a three-point goal to open the second quarter, and the Squires were off to the races. The Manchester squad outscored Valley 16-15 in the second quarter, never relinquishing the lead, and took a 31-25 lead into the lockers at the half.

However, as any Valley or Manchester fan knows, no lead is safe when these teams do battle.

After Jediah Carandante hit the first basket of the third frame, Eaton hit a three-pointer to spark his team. After two missed free throws from Manchester, Eaton hit another three to put the Vikings within two, 33-31.

Then at the 3:01 mark, Valley freshman Shane Drudge tossed the ball into the basket to tie the score at 33-all.

Manchester outscored Valley 4-2 in the final 2:44 of the third frame to take a 37-35 advantage into the final stanza.

Drudge hit the first basket of the fourth quarter to knot the score again, and a short time later Cory Vanlaningham nailed a three-point basket to give Valley its first lead since the first quarter of play, 40-37.

But Hicks answered with a trey of his own, knotting the score at 40.

The teams traded baskets until the 2:14 mark when Keaton Patrick hit his biggest three of the game. That basket put Manchester up 45-44, but just a few seconds later, he hit a set of free throws that made the score 47-44 in favor of the Squires.

"There were a lot of big plays at the end of the game," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert. "Our kids played well. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, playing against the state's leading scorer and one of the best teams in (class) 3A."

Valley threatened several times in the final minute of play, but was never able to regain a lead.

"This win was great for the kids," said Goshert. "They persevered and hung in there. This win supports what we have professed all year since game No. 1. This is the epitome of what we have been trying to do."

"Manchester deserved to win," said Bill Patrick. "They just played better than we did."

Eaton led all scorers with 24 points, while Drudge added 10 for the Vikings.

Manchester improves to 8-6 overall with the win, but more importantly 4-1 in the Three Rivers Conference, tied with Tippecanoe Valley for first place in the TRC. The Squires host Manchester next Saturday.

Valley is now 13-1 on the season and will travel to West Central Friday night.
