Manchester University Junior To Tour Brazil, Play Hoops

Thanks to an invitation from Hanover College women’s basketball coach Molly Jones, the 5-foot-7 Manchester University junior guard doesn’t need to dream of it any longer. She will experience it first-hand in August.
Hamilton, a graduate of Columbus North High School, is one of 11 NCAA Division III players from around the nation to be picked for the 2013 D3 Basketball Brazil Tour. The team will begin with orientation and practice in Orlando, Fla., before flying to Sao Paulo for contests on Aug. 6-8. They will then travel to Rio de Janeiro for two more games Aug. 10-12.
“Aside from representing the USA on the court and getting exposure to pro teams, the trip will also provide the group other opportunities,” Ron Smith, tour coordinator, said. “They include educational, social and cultural outreach experiences within the communities visited. There will also be visits to schools and historical sites throughout Brazil.”
“I know (Manchester University women’s basketball) Coach Dzurick and I are very excited this,” Hamilton said. “It gives me a great chance to interact with other Division III players on and off the court as well as seeing another culture.
“My biggest goals are to help the team do the best it can and also work well within the framework of the other players and coaches,” she added.
“This is a rare opportunity where she gets to represent our great country and university...all while gaining new cultural and basketball experiences,” Dzurick said. “I'm appreciative that Coach Jones was enthusiastic about Jocelyn joining the team and that Brad and Cindy, her parents, were very supportive of making this happen.”
Hamilton helped guide the Black and Gold to an 11-16 record and berth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals last season. She averaged better than three points (3.3) and just under three (2.9) rebounds and (2.3) assists per game as part of playing in all 27 games.
“I know Jocelyn will get everything she can out of this trip,” Dzurick said. “She'll value this experience for the rest of her life.”[[In-content Ad]]
