NORTH MANCHESTER - Specifications for two new buses that will be purchased by Manchester Community Schools will be advertised over the next two weeks.

According to business manager Steve Shumaker, he and Transportation Director Bill Reichhart discussed the specifications and prepared the information for the ads to request bids.

Shumaker told the school board Monday night that they shouldn't expect too many bids.

"It's getting to be a pretty lean market," Shumaker told the board.

Only three companies currently produce school buses, and one of those is not doing well financially. Shumaker said Bluebird/Cardinal has suffered financial trouble and did not bid last year when the school advertised for bids.

The other bus manufacturing companies are Midwest Transit and Thomas. Bids were received on both models last year.

In other business, the board:

• Heard auditors are almost finished at the school. Shumaker said there have been a few recommendations, but overall there is "nothing of great significance we have to deal with."

• Approved hiring Dorehyl Bungitak as a long-term substitute special education teacher at Laketon Elementary School, and Mitch Water as assistant swim coach at Manchester Junior-Senior High School.

• Accepted the resignation of Denise Eades as educational assistant at Manchester ELementary School.

• Approved a professional leave request for Rebecca Ramer to attend the National Reading Recovery Conference in Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 4-6.

• Approved a request from Manchester Youth Sports Association and Manchester Area Programs to use the Manchester Senior High gym for nine Sundays from Jan. 7 through March 4 for boys biddy ball.

• Approved a proposal for a $13,042 grant request from the Indiana Department of Education for the Gifted/Talented Program.

• Accepted a donation of clothes and boxes of tissues from Saint Robert's Catholic Church and the North Manchester Lion's Club.

School board members are Sally Krouse, president; Todd Speicher, Jan Fahs, Kent Terrill, Brian Schilling, Steve Lambert and Steve Flack. Superintendent is Dr. Diana Showalter. Flack was absent from Tuesday's meeting. [[In-content Ad]]
