NORTH MANCHESTER - A Reading Recovery teacher was reinstated during Manchester Community Schools' regular board meeting Tuesday.

An educator for 25 years, Diane Sincroft, was told in April that, because of funding issues, she was laid off. Now, because of slight budget increases and community input regarding the program's importance, Sincroft has been reinstated.

Three other programs were reduced in April: special education, gifted/talented and music. To determine which program should be brought back, the four areas were prioritized, with Reading Recovery ranking No. 1.

In other business, a plan that should save the school corporation $13,000 in electric bills every year was presented by Shane Quadri of Havel Brothers in Fort Wayne.

Quadri presented the federal Public Facility Energy Conservation Program, a program available to schools to borrow, interest-free, up to $100,000 to upgrade equipment for energy efficiency.

In Quadri's plan, lighting systems in both Manchester and Laketon elementary schools will be upgraded, yielding an average yearly savings of more than $13,000. In addition, the school will receive a rebate check of $13,000 from Cinergy for making the upgrade.

In total, the plan will cost about $97,000, repaid through 10 yearly payments. The equipment is said to last 30 years and requires maintenance every five years.

Havel Brothers has assisted the corporation in energy conservation since 2001.

Manchester School Board members are: president, Sally Krouse; vice president, Todd Speicher, Thomas Krantz, Kent Terrill, Carley McLaughlin. Acting superintendent is Kim Thurston. [[In-content Ad]]
