NORTH MANCHESTER - A lengthy process for Manchester Community Schools came to an end when North Manchester School board members approved a transfer of ownership of the Town Life Center, in the former Thomas Marshall Elementary School building, Tuesday.

"It's been a long, hard struggle," board president Kent Trickle said.

Manchester Community Schools has been renting the historic building to the North Manchester Community Foundation since July 1, 1991, for $1 per year. They have consistently encouraged the foundation or the town of North Manchester to take ownership of the building.

The building will be transferred to the town for $1 as soon as the town council adopts a resolution similar to the school board's resolution. The item is on the town council's agenda for this evening's meeting.

"I'm quite pleased with the ownership going to the town," Trickle said. "I wish the Town Life Center the best. I'm finally glad to see it's resolved."

"The one person that deserves a big pat on the back is [Life Center board member] Jim Garber," Todd Speicher said. "He's the one behind this."

In other business, the board:

• Granted permission to assistant superintendent Kim Thurston to advertise for Manchester and Laketon elementary schools carpet bids.

"We're really focusing on the elementary rooms in 2001," Thurston said. Carpet in the rooms has held up "very well," Thurston said - approximately 12 years.

• Granted professional leave requests for Jabin Burnworth to attend the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers convention in Indianapolis Feb. 7 to 9; Larry Dockter to attend the Indiana Music Educators State Conference at Indianapolis Jan. 12 and 13; and Bobbi Lautzenheiser to attend the Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance leadership conference in Spencer, Jan. 19 and 20.

• Accepted Kyle Wieland's resignation as assistant track coach at MHS.

• Approved David Barrett as a volunteer wrestling coach at MJHS.

• Accepted an early graduation request for a MHS student.

• The next school board meetings are Jan. 9 and 23 at 7 p.m. Executive sessions were set for 5:30 p.m. prior to both regular meetings.

Manchester Community Schools Board of Trustees includes: president Kent Trickle, vice president Virginia Gunter, secretary Larry Miller, Todd Speicher, Sally Krouse, Brad Perrott and Thom Frantz. Superintendent is Connie Curry. [[In-content Ad]]
