NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester Community School Board approved Tuesday an initiative that puts iPads in the hands of students starting next fall.
The 1:1intiative, renamed iLearn by Manchester Schools, will lease iPads beginning next fall as part of a learning technology program.
The 1:1 Steering Committee began researching the idea of bringing the initiative to Manchester in 2012. Through discussions with other districts the committee put a plan together to allow all student in grades 5-12 to take part in the initiative.
Janelle McLaughlin, Manchester curriculum director, said that iLearn “will give students the edge they need to succeed and become more engaged.”
The iPads which are being leased from Apple Inc. will be preloaded with software that is going to be used in the classroom. At a total cost of a little over $631,000 for four years, Steve Shumaker, board treasurer, told the board that the idea was to keep the lease plan as “affordable as possible.”
As a part of the iLearn initiative Matt Webb and Tony Miller, Manchester director of technology, introduced a new technology handbook that would accompany the distribution of the iPads. Miller also recommended the district hire a Network Administrator that would aid in keeping the iPads and other systems performing correctly. The board voted to approve this proposal 7-0.
In other business the board approved a recommendation to hire Brooke Airgood as the varsity girls' basketball coach for next year. Airgood will be a physical education and health teacher at Manchester Junior-Senior High School, replacing her retiring mentor, Bobbi Lautzenheiser.
After moving to Arizona from North Manchester during high school, Airgood was a three-sport athlete and NJCAA All-American in track and field at Scottsdale Community College and a scholar athlete at New Mexico State University, earning All-Conference honors in the javelin.   For the past 12 years, Airgood has been teaching and coaching in California, serving as a physical education teacher and basketball coach.
She has experience coaching at all levels, both boys and girls, and has coached volleyball, track and field, and basketball.  In 2004, she was elected to coach the All-Star game for Division 1, Southern Section California.
“We are excited to welcome Brooke Airgood back to Manchester as a teacher and coach,” said Nancy Alspaugh, MJSHS principal.  “She has outstanding qualifications to take over our girls’ basketball program and is thrilled to have an opportunity to coach and teach in her Indiana hometown.”
The next Manchester Community School Board Meeting will be May 7 at 5:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
