NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊSoccer is alive and well in North Manchester.
Tuesday night at a short regular meeting of the Manchester Community Schools Board of Trustees, Debbie Chinworth of the Manchester Soccer Club made a quick statement about the program.
The Manchester Soccer Club has leagues for children in first through third grade, fourth through sixth grade and seventh and eighth grade.
Tuesday night, Chinworth spoke of a letter the club sent to board members and administrators asking for a junior high soccer team, an improved practice field, new equipment and increased funding for games played on Good Field.
Chinworth said after the letter was sent out, the club received a letter from Manchester Junior/Senior High School Principal Nancy Alspaugh regarding the requests.
In the letter, Alspaugh told the soccer club that the school is studying the possibility of adding soccer as a sport at the junior high level and that new goals and nets already have been purchased for the practice field. Also, improvements will be made to the practice field.
Additional financial support for games at Good Field is a possibility once budget figures are finalized.
In other business, the board:
• Approved the hiring of Jodi Egner, media center assistant at Manchester Elementary School; Rebecca Ramer, Reading Recovery teacher, MES; Rolissa Underwood, instructional/attendance aide at MHS; Beth Shively, media center aide at MHS; Kyle Wieland, girls varsity golf coach at MHS.
• Accepted the resignations of Susan Iding as cook at MES and Sue Gnagy as eighth-grade girls volleyball coach at MJHS.
• Approved a contract extension for Bill Reichhart. The contract adds days in the summer to aid him with his position as transportation director.
• Changed the second August meeting date from Aug. 15 to Aug. 22.
• Approved a motion to join the All Write!!! Consortium, a collaboration of northern Indiana and southern Michigan educators and the Dekko Foundation.
• Approved a $1.75 increase in the kindergarten textbook fee to cover the cost of a student-consumed workbook. The workbook previously was supplied free to the students. The kindergarten textbook fee increases to $67.
• Heard that painting, carpeting and asphalt projects are well underway at the junior and senior high schools.
