NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊAfter defeating the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings Friday night for sole possession of the No. 1 spot in the Three Rivers Conference, the Manchester Squires boys basketball team had to prepare themselves for another TRC matchup Saturday night against Whitko.
The Squires came out with a mission and accomplished it as they held Whitko to four total points in the first quarter and earned a 70-46 victory over the Wildcats.
Manchester started its domination of the game early as Eric Swan kicked off the first quarter by sinking a three-pointer to give the Squires a quick 3-0 lead.
Joe Grant answered Swan's basket with two free throws to make the score 3-2 with 7:07 left in the first quarter.
That would be the closest Whitko would get to the Squires as Manchester went on a 16-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 19-2 lead with 2:25 left in the quarter.
"There's a fine line between intense and too tight," said Manchester Coach Gary Goshert. "Tonight we came out sharp and played with a good balance."
With 2:16, John Wendel scored the last points of the quarter to make the score 19-4 in Manchester's favor.
The Squires continued their scoring attack in the second quarter as they outscored the Wildcats 18-11 and went into the lockers with a comfortable 37-12 lead at the half.
Eric Swan outscored the Wildcats himself in the first half as he scored 16 points to the entire Whitko team's 15.
The third quarter began like the second ended as Manchester continued to produce offensively.
Rex Reimer and Swan combined for 12 of 20 Manchester points as the Squires took a 57-26 lead into the fourth frame.
Whitko made a run in the fourth quarter and outscored Manchester 20-13 behind eight points from Ben Ryan and six points from Jeff Martin, but the Wildcats were unable to overcome the 31-point deficit of the third quarter.
In the end, Manchester came out on top in a decisive 70-46 victory.
"We did a good job Friday night against Valley on both ends of the floor, and that was something we tried to sustain here tonight," said Goshert.
Swan led the Squires with 23 points and added three rebounds, three assists, and five steals while Reimer and Chris Betten added twelve points each.
"Swan got us going in the right direction from the start," said Goshert. "He got us going on both ends of the floor."
Reimer also chipped in three rebounds and led the team with six assists. Betten pulled down rebounds and to assists in the Squire effort.
"Chris (Betten) did a good job tonight," said Goshert. "He wanted the basketball, and because of that, he was able to get it."
Martin led the Whitko squad with 13 points and two rebounds, and Ben Ryan added 12 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
Manchester remains undefeated in the conference at 6-0, and improves to 11-3 overall while Whitko stands at 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the TRC.
"We fell fortunate to have played well this weekend," said Goshert. "We like the way this weekend turned out. We'll rest Monday, and get back to business Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday." [[In-content Ad]]
