ROCHESTER -ÊManchester High School No. 1 golfer Dorey Bungitak has had one problem on almost every course this season, and it had nothing to do with her golf game.

How to say her last name.

After placing first in the girls Three Rivers Conference Golf Invitational Saturday, the coach from host-school Rochester handed out the All-Conference medals.

When he got to Bungitak (pronounced bung-i-tak), he said her first name, then paused.

She stepped in, sighed and said, "Bung-i-tak," as the other members of her team giggled.

Bungitak's individual score of 82 led all scorers, but Rochester was the team of the day, racking up a team score of 404 at Mill Creek. Manchester placed second with a 410, while North Miami (432), Tippecanoe Valley (434) and Whitko (455) followed.

The Rochester golfers shot well at their home course, with four girls shooting 110 or under on the par-72 course. Leslie Douglass' 93, Kelly May's 96, Jill Bair's 105 and Alisa Cole's 110 led the Zebras to the TRC Championship.

Manchester, the second-place team with a 410, was led by Bungitak's 82. However, things didn't go as smoothly for another Squire golfer.

Just as Lyndsey Hix teed-off on the 14th hole, a deer stepped onto the fairway, right into the ball.

"That's something I've never seen before," said Goshert with a smirk. "The deer stepped on the fairway into the path of her ball. It hit the deer, but the deer survived. I know Lyndsey would have felt just awful if she had hurt it. It was definitely a unique experience, clubbing a deer with the ball."

Still, Hix finished the day with a 115, while Miriel Speicher (108), Alexis Leininger (115), and Lyndsey Music (105) rounded out the Squire quintet.

"We had a good week of play to prepare for this weekend," said Goshert. "We had a lot of confidence toward our own games going in because of the way we played earlier in the week.

"We played a Huntington North Tuesday and had our best round of the season with a 193. Then we shot a 200 on our course (Sycamore in North Manchester) against Fort Wayne Elmhurst Wednesday. Thurdsay we went to Warsaw and shot a 198 at Rozella Ford. That was a pretty good week for us."

North Miami, golfing with just four girls, finished third with a 432, while Tippecanoe Valley's 434 was just two strokes behind.

Kendra Koser earned All-conference honors when she tied for third overall with a 96 and led the Vikings. Jenni Yeiter's 103 was next for Valley, while Hannah Ervin (110), Trista Moyer (125), and Kelly Moon (132) rounded out the Valley scoring.

"We were not too bad," said Valley coach Roger Moriarty. "We shot a 434, 24 strokes better than last weekend. We missed third place by just three points. Up and down the line we did pretty well, I am pleased with this performance."

Whitko placed fifth in the TRC with a 455. However, that score was 43 strokes better than last year's 498 at the TRC Invitational. Ashley Schrader led the Wildcats with a 102, while Beth Truman had a 114. Whitko's other scores were Miranda Krider's 119, Marla Rowland's 120, and Melissa Cripe's 122.

Although each of the TRC teams has matches during the week, all eyes are now focused on the sectionals Saturday. Manchester will compete in the Huntington North Sectional, while Valley and Whitko will compete in the Warsaw Sectional.
