Manchester Parks Board Hikes Rates

NORTH MANCHESTER - North Manchester's parks and recreation board Tuesday approved park and recreation membership rate increases.
The increases push non-North Manchester residents' membership rates 40 percent higher and North Manchester residents' rates up 20 percent. The department operates a swimming pool, weight room and other facilities.
Resident family rates - $145 in 2000 - were raised to $174. Nonresident family rates - $200 in 2000 - were increased to $245.
"Through the years we've tried to make some distance between the two (resident and nonresident membership rates)," said department director Brian Wagner.
In the late 1980s, the rate difference between residents and non-residents was $10, according to Wagner.
Membership is two-thirds residents and one-third nonresidents.
"We're still cheap compared to stand-alone facilities," said Wagner.
"We're less expensive," said Larry Miller, board member, to Wagner.
"That's what I meant," said Wagner, smiling.
In other business, the board:
• Nominated Brad Yoder to the parks board for a second term. Yoder accepted. His term was to expire in January 2002.
• Heard that pool admission numbers were down compared to 2000. In year-to-date numbers, total patron count is 232 less than last year. Wagner blamed the downed numbers on "extra-mild weather."
"So we should all hope for snow," said Wagner.
• Corrected previous reports concerning the insurance liability and the skate park the board is interested in building. Turning the skate park over to a nonprofit organization, reports said, would allow for lower insurance rates. Wagner said the skate park in a nonprofit organization's hands would enable any insurance coverage.
North Manchester Department of Parks and Recreation Board members are: president Anne Myers, vice president Dennis Frieden, parks director Brian Wagner, assistant parks director Donna Boomershine, Larry Miller and Kay Batdorf. Brad Yoder is Plan Commission representative. [[In-content Ad]]
