NORTH MANCHESTER - Wednesday evening, the North Manchester Town Council approved bids for road salt from three companies. However, only one contract will be awarded.

As is normal practice for the council, all three bids received were approved. The final contractor then will be decided by town manager John Mugford after he receives more information from each of the bidders.

Mugford will choose between Morton Salt of Chicago, which bid $60.52 per ton; Cargill Salt of St. Clair, Mich., which bid $51.94 per ton; and North American Salt of O.P., Kan., which bid $50.24 per ton. Once Mugford makes his decision, he will notify the board.

The town currently pays $48.75 per ton for the salt from Morton Salt, so each of the bids reflects a higher price.

In other business, the council:

• Approved releasing $8,750 to update the software at the police department. According to police chief David Young, the software will allow the department to keep current records and update the system the department currently uses. "It's about one-third the price of updating the whole system," said Young. He added that his staff likes the current software, but within two years it will be obsolete. By updating now, the cost will be lower than in the future.

• Approved closing streets and providing traffic control for a 5K walk/run for Riley Hospital May 6 at 9 a.m. The race will follow the same route as the FunFest run. "We are hoping to make this an annual event," said race committee representative Nathan Sautter.

• Heard that the tree advisory board received a $18,200 grant for a project on the west end of town. The project should begin in early September and finish later that month.

• Heard updates on the sewer project along with sludge processing. Both projects are currently in their early stages.

• Heard that Steven Rhoades is moving, forcing the police department to look for a new crossing guard for the next school year.

• Heard an update on the insurance for the new skateboard park. Parks and recreation director Dean Nardecchia is in the process of securing a bid for the insurance. As of Wednesday, he had not heard back from the insurance company. Nardecchia will update the board as more information becomes available.

• Approved financial reports, claims and minutes from the June meeting.

Town Council members are Chris Garber, Diana Haupert, Don Rinearson, Stan Escott and Laura Rager. Town manager is Dan Hannaford, secretary-treasurer is Nancy Reed and town attorney is Charles Tiede. [[In-content Ad]]
